Axel Wismüller studied medicine at the Technical University of Munich and the University of Regensburg with study exchange programs in Switzerland (Kantonsspital Winterthur) and USA (Yale University). He received his M.D. degree from the Technical University of Munich for a scientific thesis in neurology in 1992. He successfully passed the U. S. medical examinations ECFMG and FLEX. Partly in parallel to his clinical work in internal medicine, he studied physics at the University of Munich where he received a German masters degree in theoretical physics (Dipl.-Phys.Univ.) from the University of Munich in 1996 for a diploma thesis on neural network computation in speech analysis. Since 1997, he has been working in clinical radiology at the Department of Radiology at the City Center Hospital of the University of Munich, where he founded the Digital Image Processing Group. His main research interests are focussed on both the theory of neural computation, in particular intelligent and self-organizing systems for pattern analysis, and their application to biomedical signal processing problems such as segmentation in multidimensional image data from radiology and nuclear medicine as well as biomedical time-series analysis.
